In recent years discrimination against women and ethnic minorities has been the main focus of these laws, but the idea that all citizens, irrespective of background, should be treated equally is deeply entrenched, even if it is often not actually achieved. Clearly such laws can be implemented in such a way that they conflict with those notions of individualism that underpin the philosophy of limited government.
